Writer's block - wanting to write and not writing - is a persistent problem that every writer deals with. This is a familiar obstacle that seems to grow the more we focus on it. Every writer experiences different roadblocks on their writing journey. Some of those roadblocks are external: rejections from literary journals, disagreements with book publishers, lack of time and resources, and the likes.

Common Causes of Writer's Block

The reasons of your block may vary, but some common ones include:

  • Fear: Many writers struggle with being afraid, with putting their ideas out there for everyone to see and critique.

  • Perfectionism: This is a trait that makes life an endless report card, it's a double-edged sword which most writers dread.

  • Fear of Rejection: Many writers fear been rejected, especially if you hope to be published or recognized as an authority.

  • Self-Doubt: This is characterized by feelings of uncertainty regarding one or more aspects of oneself.

Here are few tips to overcome this obstacle,

1. Enhance Your Workspace

Make your designated office a place you want to be. Declutter your workspace, try putting out some fresh flowers or a picture that inspires. Take into account the time of the day you are most productive.

2. Make Writing a Habit

Whether you're just starting out with writing, or you're a seasoned pro one of the most common tips from established authors to aspiring authors is to "write everyday". This is a powerful advice: a daily action helps builds momentum.

3. Join Writers' Group

Writing is a lonely endeavor and every writer needs support - you need support to keep you on track. Try joining a group with a clear purpose will be of great help by offering advice, giving useful information, and providing positive criticism to help writers enhance their writing skills.

4. Pomodoro Technique

Decide on what you would like to write. This can be a scene, a chapter of your novel, or simple a page of free writing that will help stimulate an idea. Set a timer for 25 minutes and don't stop writing until the timer rings. Finally, take a five minutes break and repeat these steps, sticking carefully to the clock.

When all else fails...

  • Go to conferences! It helps to meet like-minded people with similar goals and challenges.

  • Have gratitude for what's working, celebrate your small wins and work on your weaknesses.

  • Stay positive and don't let fear take over and have you convinced that things won't work out for the best.
